How to attach an email to your emails in Gmail
Send emails as attachments
Email threads on Gmail just got a makeover. The G Suite system now allows users to attach emails to an email. No longer do you have to forward or download an email first before sending it.
“You can attach emails to other emails without downloading them first. When you attach an email, it becomes a .eml file.” — Google
Avid emailers can now attach as many emails as they like, as long as it stays under the maximum file size of 25 MB.
The email attachment opens in a new window. That’s great news for those who love to have several tabs open at a time.
With the previous way to forward emails, you’d end up with a useless jumble of words and images cluttered in the body of the message. The new way references an email thread in a different conversation.
Microsoft Outlook already had this capability. It’s popular with corporate email users. They’ve been able to attach an email in Outlook for so long that it’s strange that Google only just got into the game.
But users who have only used G Suite at their workplace will be happy to see this new feature, which is available to all editions. It will be ON by default.
You’ll know if you have it by clicking in the three dots More menu and see “Forward as attachment”.
The gradual rollout began on December 9th, 2019 for Rapid Release users — the first to see new features when they’re released. It became available for me a few days later.
Scheduled Release will start on January 13, 2020. Scheduled Release is the default and its users get new features about one week after they’re released to Rapid Release users.
Now you may ask: what took Google so long?
GOOGLE says:
“We’ve heard from you that there are situations where attaching emails makes more sense than forwarding separate emails, like wanting to forward multiple messages related to a single topic. With this new functionality, you can do exactly that. Sending emails as attachments allows you to write a summary email message to your recipients and attach the set of supporting emails that recipients can directly open in their mail client.”
There you have it. Google listened to users’ feedback.
This is how it works!
Forwarding emails as an attachment:
1. Open Gmail on your computer
2. Choose the emails to attach
(attach as many emails as you’d like, if over 25 MB, it will attach via Google Drive)
3. Click three-dot More menu
4. Click Forward as attachment
A new Compose email window opens with the attachment loaded at the bottom.
5. Compose as usual.
6. Click Send
